Flavoring of Medications

The pharmacist's at Rancho Park Compounding Pharmacy know that medication compliance can be a problem, especially for children. To make taking medicine more pleasant, we can flavor medication to a wide variety of tastes.

Flavor can improve the acceptability of nearly everything that passes the lips, whether it is food, beverages, toothpaste or medicine.

Using PCCA Flavors™, a pharmacy flavoring system offered by Professional Compounding Centers of America, Inc., Rancho Park Compounding Pharmacy has access to more than 100 flavors and flavor combinations, including: bubble-gum, apple, blueberry, cherry-cola, eggnog custard, grape, Hawaiian pineapple, root beer float, tutti-frutti and watermelon. They also work with veterinarians, to flavor medications for pets, with choices like: beef, cheese, chicken, liver, and peanut butter for dogs; salmon, sardine and tuna for cats; and alfalfa and carrot cream for horses.

Reformulating medication by adding flavor is one example of pharmacy compounding, the pharmacy method of preparing medications to meet each prescriber's and patient's unique needs. In addition to flavoring medications, the compounding pharmacist can prepare medicine in a variety of dosage forms including: lollipops, troches or lozenges, syrups, capsules and ointments.

Once your child smells bubble-gum or tutti-fruiti, instead of the bitter smell of commercial medication, they will have no problem taking it.

Compounding provides a viable option for solving patient medication problems. For example, many patients are allergic to commonly used fillers, dyes, binders and other additives that are a part of mass-produced medications. In addition, many medications are available only in limited strengths and dosages. Compounding pharmacists can help physicians and patients by customizing medications to solve specific needs.
